Winery Overview

image72

Location

• Sources grapes solely from its 55 acre estate vineyard on a 335 acre estate on Bell Mountain, 5 miles east of Healdsburg

• The sleek, contemporary, architect-designed winery is on the Bell Mountain Ranch site

• The chic, modern tasting room, patio and bocce ball court, adjacent to their vintage hipster bar, are in the heart of Alexander Valley, on a corner where the old local store and saloon used to be

• There's a second tasting room at the ranch with winery with tours by appointment

Best known for

• Rising star in Alexander Valley, popular with millennials, racking up 90+ pt. scores from Robert Parker for Bordeaux blends and Cabernets

• Makes 12+ wines from certified vines ($27-95)

• The winery was founded in 1998 by Christopher Medlock James, hedge funder (his Partner Funds has $3 billion under management), and Ames Morison, ancient history major and winemaker; the two forged a deep friendship as students at Tulane University in New Orleans

• They looked at hundreds of properties before finding their dream site—Bell Mountain, a secluded location with water, meadows and woods

• While most of the vines are located in the Alexander Valley AVA, a small portion are in the Russian River Valley AVA

• Committed to Bordeaux varietals, their focus is on red blends, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot

• Inspired from the start to be as green as possible, the winery runs on solar energy, has a small organic produce garden, and uses biodiesel fuel

• The estate grows 800 olive trees and sells olive oil and other farm products in its tasting rooms

• More than 250 acres of Bell Mountain remain wild—home to native oak woodlands, grasslands, and chapparal

• Current release wines won no less than six 90+ pt. scores from Robert Parker, who wrote, "an impressive portfolio...the wines are to be taken seriously"

Winery Overview

image75

Location

• Sources grapes solely from its 30 acre estate vineyard in the Mayacamas mountains on a 200 acre property in the Alexander Valley AVA (in the northeastern corner of Sonoma County)

• The wines are made in Napa at a custom crush facility; a new estate winery is under construction (completion expected in 2019)

• Tastings are offered indoors or in an outdoor setting on the vineyard site

Best known for

• Top notch, under the radar producer making some of Sonoma's best Cabernets with Bordeaux trained, superstar winemaker Philippe Melka at the helm

• Makes four wines ($40-150) with its flagship Cabernet rated 97 pts.

• Proprietor Fahri Diner, a Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur originally from Cyprus, and his wife Constance bought the secluded property (next door to the former home of vintner Jess Jackson) when it was a run down vineyard; he spent more than a decade rejuvenating it with the help of organic consultant Amigo Bob Cantisano

• The site features a steep, terraced hillside that forms a natural amphitheater; it sits directly on top of the Mayacamas fault line over a variety of soil types

• The lower, flat part of the property is home to a two acre culinary garden, bee hives, and an orchard as well as sheep, goats, cows and chickens

• As one might expect from a Cypriot, the Diners grow olive trees; their extra virgin olive oil is sold locally and at the estate

• All of its wine is sold directly to consumers or to its wine club

• Juan Alcantara oversees the vineyards

• Wine critic Robert Parker commented on a recent vintage of Skipstone Cabernet: "gorgeous stuff...showcases just how brilliant the Bordeaux varietals can be from the hillsides of Alexander Valley"
