• The Thorpes were among the first to research a variety of Chardonnay clones and raise a broad selection of them in the Carneros

• One of their Pinot clones comes from the fabled Domaine Romanée Conti winery in Burgundy

Crazy Flower Wines | Bennett Valley & Carneros AVA

Winery Overview

image34

Location

• Sources grapes solely from its six acres of estate vineyards including three acres in Napa's Carneros and three acres on Rancho Recoso in Sonoma's Bennett Valley

• The wines are made in a custom crush facility in Napa

Best known for

• Merlot grower Kari Flores' in house label producing value priced wines from her family's Merlot and Cabernet Franc vineyards

• Makes three wines from certified vines ($25) under its own label

• The Flores' Cabernet Franc grapes (from Sonoma's Bennett Valley) go into Horse and Plow wines and to the Napa label Influx Wines

• The winery's named for Flores' last name (Flores means flowers); the logo come from a hooked rug made by her Kari's grandmother

• Flores began as a grower in 2000; in 2006, after the movie Sideways reduced demand for the Merlot grapes she was selling to local vintners, she began bottling her own wines under the Crazy Flower label

• On her Napa ranch, she also raises bees, chickens and babydoll Southdown sheep

• The historic farmhouse and water tower on the Carneros vineyard site (where she grows Merlot) date back to 1900
