Winery Overview

Location

• Sources grapes exclusively from its 20 acres of organic vines on steep hillsides at 1,600-1,900 feet of elevation in the Mayacamas mountains in Sonoma County; the site has varied soils and exposures

• The wines are made locally in a custom crush facility

• There is no tasting room; the winery is not open to the public but the wines can be purchased online

Best known for

• New, elite winery making a Cabernet blend from a 240 acre mountain site

• Makes one wine from estate vines ($150, 95+ pts.)

• Proprietor Henry Cornell, formerly a Goldman Sachs exec, bought the property in 2000

• After marrying Vanessa Cornell and starting a family of five sons, Cornell began converting the vineyards to organics in 2011, with the help of veteran organic consultants Amigo Bob Cantisano and Phil Coturri

• In 2013, A-list Napa wine consultant Francoise Peschon was hired to revitalize the vineyard and elevate the winemaking; Peschon was formerly the winemaker at Araujo Estate, a prestigious winery later purchased by the owner of Chateau Latour

• Today the winemaker is Elizabeth Tangney, who formerly worked with celebrated Napa winemaker Aaron Pott; Peschon is the consulting winemaker

• Armando Hernandez is the vineyard manager; he and his wife Esperanza look after cows and goats, grow organic vegetables with the crew, and make goat cheese

• The estate also produces olive oil from 150 olive trees

• Top wine critics have showered high praise on the Peschon era wines; Wine Bible author Karen MacNeil called them "stunning" while Antonio Galloni of Vinous, who is also a friend of the couple, wrote, "these are gorgeous mountain Cabernets endowed with real class and pedigree”

Winery Overview

Location

• Sources grapes solely from its 22 acres of hillside vines on a wooded site along Mark West Creek east of Santa Rosa

• The wines are made at a custom crush facility in Napa

Best known for

• Rising star on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas mountains making award winning Bordeaux varietals

• Makes six wines from certified vines ($26-55)

• Chilean real estate investor Pedro Arroyo and his wife Karen Arroyo founded the winery when they bought a 500 acre hillside property along Mark West Creek; the two have spent a decade clearing it, reviving it and planting new vines

• The vineyard soils sit at an elevation of 600-1,100 feet; they are decomposed volcanic and gravelly loam with some clay—and lots of fractured rocks—giving rise to the title of the winery's second label—Split Rock

• Pedro Arroyo wanted a place to celebrate his Chilean family's winemaking heritage and Malbec; Viluko launched its inaugural 2013 vintage in 2016

• The Tubbs fire of 2017 tore through the property, burning down the winery's historic wooden barn, the Arroyo's home, and a guest house, but the wines remained safe (they were stored elsewhere)

• Due to the fire, the winery lost a third of its vines and skipped the 2017 vintage; it had a fruitful harvest in 2018 and new vintages will be released from 2018 onward

• Brian Penterman oversees the vines; Timothy Milos makes the wines

• The red wines are made using native yeasts

• The Split Rock label, created to be more approachable in its youth, won a Double Gold (for the 2012 vintage) in the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

• The winery's off to a fine start, winning 90+ pt. scores from Robert Parker for two of its Cabernets; Parker's take: "There is a lot of potential here"
