Among all growers, red wines outnumber white wines in Sonoma by a 2:1 ratio with Pinot Noir ranking first. It's followed closely by Cabernet Sauvignon.

Zinfandel is the third most planted grape, followed by Merlot.

Though Rhone wines are well suited to the climate (and a good choice for climate change), they are underrepresented overall, but still embraced.

A small number of Italian varieties are also grown.

Guide to Abbreviations

• Pinot Noir By Price & Region

Wine Notes

While 13,383 acres of Pinot Noir are planted in Sonoma, fewer than 200 acres are organic or biodynamic.

A star performer in Sonoma where it's in high demand,, the thin skinned and finicky grape is not the easiest grape to grow, as it is prone to mildew and shatter. But when it's well made, its flavors are hauntingly ethereal and can be addictive.

Of the 15 Sonoma Pinot wineries and growers who are certified, eight are biodynamic, demonstrating the grape's cultural ties to Burgundy, where biodynamic farming produces some of the best Pinot Noir in the world.

Wine Notes

• Producers

The more forgiving and thicker skinned Cabernet Sauvignon grape thrives in Sonoma, growing on 12,505 acres.

Though it's widely grown, the most expensive and sought after organic producers grow it at higher elevations.

Moon Mountain District AVA is a popular spot.

Sonoma's famous for its old vine Zinfandels, a unique treasure. The romance of old vines—some dating back to the 1880's—continues where they survive. They are clustered mostly in Sonoma Valley, Dry Creek and Geyserville. Yet modern plantings also make great wines with the freshness and energy the variety is capable of.

Zinfandel is often blended with another old treasured variety—Petite Sirah—which, although it has a reputation for being a big, full bodied red wine on its own, can be made in an elegant, food friendly style in the hands of a great producer.

Italian Varieties & Other Reds

Though Syrah and other Rhone grapes are ideally suited to much of Sonoma's climate, little is grown. (Cab is King.)

Grenache is the favorite of the county's most famous organic vineyard expert, Phil Coturri, who has planted it often in the vineyards he farms.

Coturri also believes it is a grape that will be smart choice to plant as it is more resilient in the face of climate change.

Italian reds are still a rarity in California.

However, several Sonoma wineries have a love of all things Tuscan and originally started their ranches to make olive oil and then embraced and made wines from Italian varieties.
