Winery Overview

Location

• Sources its red wines from its 37 acres of estate vineyards on its 95 acre Sonoma Valley estate; it buys grapes for its only white wine from a local non-organic grower

• The winery and tasting room are located on the estate property in Glen Ellen

Best known for

•  Family owned winery founded by former Disney creative chief and Pixar founder John Lasseter and his wife Nancy on a historic site in Sonoma Valley

• Makes 10 wines from certified vines ($24-54) with its best rated 90-92 pts.

• The winery's focus is on Bordeaux and Rhone varietals

• The property's historic roots date back to 1888 when it was first planted to vines; today a 1.5 acre old vine Zinfandel block, planted in 1919, continues to bear fruit

• John Lasseter refers to the winery as "Nancy's movie"; Nancy Lasseter started the winery after raising the couple's five sons in downtown Sonoma—during that time the couple developed a love of Malbec, making wine at home before starting the winery

• The estate has three vineyards and soil types: Upper Blocks with cobbly soils (17 acres, Bordeaux varietials), Creekside Blocks with rocky alluvial soils (7 acres, Rhone varieties) and the Heritage Block (10 acres, Zinfandel field blend)

• Sonoma's veteran, organic vineyard manager Phil Coturri oversees the vines; Julia Iantosca makes the wines

• The Lasseters also sell grapes to local vintners (who use the name Justi Creek Vineyards on these single vineyard designate wines)

• John Lasseter keeps two cherished vehicles on the estate including the 1964 Ford Falcon that inspired the movie Cars and a vintage steam train, the Marie-E, which belonged to his mentor, Ollie Johnston, one of the original Disney animators (known as the Nine Old Men)

• Fans can buy a limited edition, Hawaiian, 50th anniversary shirt that Nancy designed for John that features art from his films, a wine glass, and other personal mementoes of his life

• The Lasseters are fans of the poster-esque art of Dennis Ziemienski; he's designed all of their wine labels

• While many Disney lovers embrace the brand, the wines easily stand on their own merits; three of its current releases were rated 90+ pts.

Winery Overview

Location

• Sources its estate wines from its 22 acres of organic and biodynamic vines in Sonoma Valley on a 37 acre estate, just north of Kenwood in the Annadel Gap; several wines come from local non-organic growers

• The wines are made in a warehouse winery in Sonoma

• The tasting room is in downtown Sonoma on the Plaza

Best known for

• Rising Pinot Noir and Rhone wine star uniquely situated in the Annadel Gap at the north end of Sonoma Valley

• Makes nine estate wines from certified organic and biodynamic vines ($28-74)

• The winery is focused on Pinot Noir, growing nine different clones (777, 667, 115, 943, Calera, Haynes/Martini, Chambertin, 90, and 37/Mt. Eden); it also bottles several single clone Pinots that showcase the variations in taste

• The vineyard benefits from the maritime influence from the west through the Annadel Gap, which cools both the Pinot Noir and Rhone varietals

• In 2014, the winery converted to biodynamic farming with the aid of the French vineyard consultant Philippe Coderey

• In 2018, the owners hired the celebrated winemaker Philippe Melka, as the lead winemaker for Westwood; Melka's associate Maayan Koschitzky is the new director of winemaking

• The Pinots have been cleaning up in wine competitions; its Pommard Clone Pinot took Best of Class at the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition; Wine and Spirits magazine rated its recent Clone 90 Pinot 91 pts.
