Getting to Know Sonoma's Organic Side

What's Different About Our Tasting and Touring Descriptions

The Internet Doesn't Always Get It Right

Sonoma's big! In fact, it's 1.5 times the size of the state of Rhode Island. Its wine regions are varied and far flung. Wineries occupy a 70 mile long span.

When it comes to picking wineries to visit, you need help to get the big picture.

We've done our best to and offer you all kinds of resources:

    • Regions Overview: The Big Picture

    • Tasting and Touring Fees: Comprehensive Price List (Free to $125)

    • Town Guides: Region by Region

    • 3%

What's Different About Our Tasting and Touring Descriptions

The Internet Doesn't Always Get It Right

Yes, there are free listings online about "Sonoma's Organic and Biodynamic Wineries" like this one from the county's tourism bureau.

But all too often they list wineries that are not certified and some that do not even practice organic farming.

(When we called to notify the tourist bureau of mistakes, they were not interested in correcting them. The responses was, "We don't police the wineries. We just promote the county.")

Don't be misled. We verify certification on all listed wineries.

    • Percentage of Wines from Organic Grapes

You can't assume that all the wines at each winery are from organic vines. Wineries that are 100% are bolded. Know before you go.

Note: Don't skip the wineries that are not 100%. They make some of the great wines, too.

This is one of the few creekside wineries where guests can sit back and listen to the river flow. (The winery's also restored the river and brought back fish.) The owner, Gio, is a bike fan and the winery is bicycle friendly, too. The outdoor bocce ball court is popular.

On weekdays, walk ins are also welcome at the winery's famous red chairs on the river, a relaxing spot (reserved for wine club members on the weekends). The winery helped to restore the river and bring back the fish here. The kid and dog friendly property is also a biodynamic farm with a garden, vineyard and livestock. Biodynamic in Sonoma

Sonoma is a leader in biodynamic vineyards.

Eleven wineries in the county have Demeter certified biodynamic vines. That's more than any other county in the U.S.

Sometimes called "organic plus," biodynamic certification requires a winery to meet organic requirements as well as additional sustainable and regenerative agriculture standards.

Overseen by Demeter USA, this certification requires wineries to use herbal and mineral sprays that promote plant health, set aside 10 percent of the winery's land for biodiversity, and implement water and conservation practices.
